Mail that matches the van, not a leftover Gmail.
A US local shop still sending invoices from mike.smith.plumbing.jobs@gmail.com looks unfinished. The fix is one mailbox on a domain you control: mike@rivercitydrain.com. We recommend Google Workspace as the default — then we say when Microsoft 365 or registrar forwarding is the honest move.
- Own the domain first. A mailbox needs a name people can type. If you still need a .com, start at our sister site Start A Site — then come back here for mail.
- Buy one Workspace seat. Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Meet on your domain. One human, one license. Do not pre-buy a team you do not have.
- Point MX records and test. Mail does not work because you paid. It works when MX (and usually SPF, DKIM, DMARC) point at Google and a test message arrives on cellular.
- Print the new address. Site, Google Business Profile, invoices, the van. Keep personal Gmail as a forwarding attic for a quarter — not as the public face.
Why you@yourdomain.com is the actual shopfront
Customers still use the email address as a filter. What professional mail means, why personal Gmail undercuts invoices, and what to print first.
Put Google Workspace on a domain you already own
Admin console, domain verification, MX records, and a test message from a phone. How to attach Workspace without breaking a site that already loads.
One mailbox, not a team you do not have
How many Google Workspace seats a one-person shop actually needs, when aliases beat extra licenses, and which add-ons to leave unchecked.
Leave personal Gmail without losing the last five years
Keep the old inbox as an attic for a quarter, move vendors when you pay them, and do not dual-wield forever. A migration that fits a real route.
Google Workspace vs Microsoft 365 vs forwarding
Gmail-native vs Outlook-native vs a registrar trick. We recommend a default. We name the exceptions. We do not sell star ratings.
Who this is for
A US local service business — plumber, HVAC tech, photographer, consultant, similar — whose public address is still a personal Gmail, a Yahoo leftover, or a registrar “forwarding” trick.
The job is not “migrate a 40-person company.” The job is: homeowners, editors, and city permitting can write you@yourdomain.com and you actually receive it.
If you already live in Outlook and Word every hour, Microsoft 365 is the honest alternative — we say so on the comparison. If you only need a weekend bridge while Workspace finishes verifying, forwarding can wait. It is not the shopfront.
What we will not do
- Pretend this is Google’s official help center or admin.google.com.
- Invent star scores, “editors’ choice” ribbons, or fake coupons.
- Quote a Workspace price we cannot date and source. Verify current pricing on the merchant site.
- Tell you to buy ten seats because a webinar said “scale.”
